BAD WEATHER POLICY: It is Hastings United Methodist Church policy to cancel all meetings and classes when the Hastings Schools Districts 200 cancels classes because of weather. This should be communicated to each member of the group as part of the group's covenants and guidelines, and the church office should be notified that the meeting is cancelled, so that a notice can be posted at the doors for those who could not be reached. If the evening events are cancelled at school, HUMC will also remain closed.

HUMC is Partnering with Angel Food Ministry - Angel Food Ministry

Angel Food Ministries is a non-profit, non-denominational organization dedicated to providing grocery relief and financial support to communities throughout the United States. The program began in 1994 with 34 families in Monroe, Georgia (between Atlanta and Athens), and has grown to serve hundreds of thousands of families every month across 35 states. Angel Food Ministries crosses denominational lines and has spread the good news of the gospel of Christ through salvation tracts that are placed in each food order.

Blessings by the box

Angel Food is available in a quantity that can fit into a medium-sized box at $30 per unit. Each month's menu is different than the previous month and consists of both fresh and frozen items with an average retail value of approximately $60. Comparison shopping has been done across the country in various communities using a wide range of retail grocery stores and has resulted in the same food items costing from between $42 and $78.

Generally, one unit of food assists in feeding a family of four for about one week or a single senior citizen for almost a month. The food is all the same high quality one could purchase at a grocery store. There are no second-hand items, no damaged or out-dated goods, no dented cans without labels, no day-old breads and no produce that is almost too ripe.

Also offered are specialty boxes such as steaks, chicken and pork. Many participants in this bonus program appreciate the expanded choices. Additionally, there is no limit to the number of units or bonus foods an individual can receive, and there are no applications to complete or qualifications to which participants must adhere. Angel Food Ministries also participates in the U.S. Food Stamp program, using the Off-Line Food Stamp Voucher system.

It's both a Bargain and a Blessing!

Stewardship and Generosity - Stewardship

Stewardship And Generosity

Paul encouraged generosity at all times: "Out of the most severe trial, their overflowing joy and their extreme poverty welled up in rich generosity." II Corinthians 8:2

Stewardship - to serve as one who manages another's property, finances or other affairs - is not just means for the church to raise money. It is a way of life that recognizes that everything we have is God's, and we are simply managing those resources while here on earth.

The Bible is filled with examples of grateful response to God's generous gifts. The Bible also teaches about our personal responsibility to share with others and warns against selfishness and misuse of God's economic resources.

Methodist approach to Stewardship

John Wesley urged those in connection with him to "Earn all you can and save all you can, so that you can give all you can." He modeled modest living and sacrificial giving. Wesley made sure those early classes of "methodists" took weekly offerings to help others in need.

Today, we United Methodists join others to help all of God's children...whenever and wherever we can. Just as Jesus multiplied the loaves and fishes when the crowd grew hungry. Through our congregation, we are the heart, spirit and hands of God's outreaching love. Life grows here through the joy of generosity.

Practicing good stewardship

How can you learn and practice good Christian stewardship?Pray about your regular giving to God's ministry and mission through Resurrection. Model the humility and generosity God calls you to do. Take Good Sense financial classs. Set up a schedule to eventually reach full tithing, or begin by tithing one week of every month. Give your time, talents and financial aid to Missions and our new church campuses. Remember HUMC in your will or estate plan through the Methodist Foundation.

Alpha at Hastings United Methodist:

The Alpha course is an opportunity for anyone to explore the Christian faith in a relaxed, non-threatening manner over 10, thought-provoking weekly sessions on Sunday Evenings from 6:30 - 8:00 pm. ( Childcare is offered) . It's low key, friendly and fun. Alpha as been offered at many United Methodist Churches including the churches that Pastor Chris ( North Branch United Methodist ) and John Mitchem ( Parker United Methodist ) have served in the past. They both feel that this is the correct time to offer Alpha again at HUMC.

Alpha Basics

Here at HUMC , the Alpha course consists of a series of talks presented by DVD addressing key issues relating to the Christian faith. Our Classes are led by Jeff Davis, Chris Nelson, Dan Alsdurf and John Mitchem Light Desert There is a light desert together at the beginning of each session which gives people a chance to get to know each other.Talk: After each talk we divide into small groups to discuss the topic of the evening, ask questions and express opinions.Coffee & Small groups: Listen, learn, discuss and discover. And ask anything. Alpha is a place where no question is too simple or too hostile.

Is Alpha for me?

The Alpha course is for everyone! It is especially geared to:People interested in investigating ChristianityThose with questions about the faith and interested in a short-term small group experienceNew ChristiansChristians who want to brush up on the basics

What others at United Methodist Churches are saying: "For the novice Christian like me, the Alpha Course provided an excellent road map/blueprint and is the impetus which will propel me down a lifelong path of committed Christian faith." --Ron S."When I first signed up for Alpha, I was afraid I wouldn't know enough to be able to participate. ... When I got into Alpha, I found there were a lot of people just like me who wanted to learn more. Alpha was a very safe environment in which to ask questions." --Susan B. "Coming to Alpha as spiritual novices, we had our expectations exceeded far beyond our hopes. We were greeted weekly with warmth, enthusiasm, support, and a tremendous knowledge of Christianity and the personal connection that is there to be made for every one of us. Alpha offered a fantastic foundation and gave us even more momentum as we continued in our journey of faith. "It was an amazing experience for me. I attended this class looking for clarification of my beliefs and a way to make the Church feel more like my Church home. My initial goals were met and exceeded. . I would recommend this class to anyone!" --Lori M."It was a quick start to my long idle Christian walk. I enjoyed the simple way some questions were answered." --Gary S.

Prayer Shawl Ministry - Prayer Shawl Ministry

We, at Hastings United Methodist Church, know and depend on the loving embrace of God the Father in our times of sorrow and pain. The shawls and lap robes that are given to those experiencing difficult times are created in prayer for the individuals receiving them. Each step of the process is covered in prayer, from the selection of the yarn to the presentation of the completed shawl or lap robe

Every shawl and lap robe is prayerfully selected for each individual in need. They are given to those who have lost loved ones; those who have suffered from health related problems; those who are in pain physically, spiritually, emotionally. They are given privately and in confidence.

Both women and men are recipients of prayer shawls and lap robes.

Beginning in the winter of 2007/2008 we added prayer cloths to this ministry. These prayer cloths are given to people of all ages who are entering a time of deep, consecrated prayer and give the person praying something tangible to hold during the time of prayer. The cloths are hand made and prayed over, just as are the shawls and lap robes. If you would like a prayer cloth for your prayer time, stop by the church office. All you need to do is ask. It will be given to you.

We are always looking for people who can knit or crochet (or those who would like to learn) to make the shawls. If you would like online assistance to learn to knit or crochet use the following links:

Are you looking for a new Prayer Shawl pattern? The following web sites contain an abundance of links to free shawl patterns on the internet. You are sure to find just the right one:

Knitted Shawl Patterns

Crochet Shawl Patterns

Prayer is the most critical part of this ministry, so if you can pray, we want you to be a partner with us, pray with us, and pray for us. We depend on our partners to inform us of where the needs exist; who needs to be physically wrapped in the love of God.

One Sunday each month the shawls and lap robes will be in the sanctuary. Those who so desire may pray over them before or after each of the three services.

We meet together on a rotating schedule during the school year. Check with the church office to find out when the next meeting is. But you don't need to be at the meetings to participate with us in the Prayer Shawl Ministry. Feel free to knit or crochet a shawl on your own. If you have a pattern you like, go ahead and use that one. All we ask is that you remember to infuse your time and the shawl with prayer.

"Shout for joy, O heavens; rejoice, O earth; burst into song, O mountains! For the Lord comforts His people and will have compassion on His afflicted ones." Isaiah 49:13

KIDS Church at 11 is designed for children ages 4 years to grade 3.

Children attend 11 AM worship with parents and then move to KidsChurch at 11:15 for a special kids prayer time and an interactive kid-sized "sermon" through storytelling. In KidsChurch we try to...Keep It Dangerously Simple

...so that children can understand who Jesus is and how much He loves even His smallest followers. Anyone from 4th or 5th grade is welcome to apply for the job of assistant.

KidsChurch runs through the summer, as well as, during the school year.

KidsJAM? - Children Ministry

KidsJAM stands for a kid's time with Jesus And Me. KidsJAM happens at 9:30 AM on Sunday mornings and is a continuation of the 4Kids & Family's ministry mission: helping to connect the heart of a child to the heart of God. This happens in different ways with different ages on Sunday morning.

Birth-preschool: The goal is for every child, through stories and playtime, to learn these 3 foundational truths: God made me.God loves me.Jesus wants to be my forever Friend.

K-5th grade: The goal for every child in this age group is to learn these 3 basic truths: I need to make the wise choice.I can trust God no matter what.I should treat others the way I want to be treated.

These truths are taught through high energy music and the Storyteller's Bible teaching in a large group. They are applied during Crew Time with fun and thought- provoking activities in small groups. Always, the goal is to connect kids to the heart of God.

Once a month, the new theme is introduced by a cast of zany characters during a Family Production where parents join kids after KidsJAM so everyone hears the same thing at the same time. This fast paced half-hour of skits, media clips, gameshows and hilarious fun introduce the new theme that will start the following Sunday. Family Production generally occurs on last Sunday of the month from 10:30 to 11 AM. Preschoolers and babies are welcome to come with Mom and Dad too.

Parents are further equipped to help their kids carry the theme into real life with the Refrigerator Doors and the GodTimes that come home each week. Refrigerator Door is just that, a picture of a refrigerator door complete with Post It Note reminders of the story, verse and theme, as well as, some provocative questions to get the conversation going at dinnertime.GodTime is a small folder for each kid that helps establish a special time alone with God four times during the week.Starting in fall of 2008, both Refrigerator Door and GodTime will be available online for parents to download. This makes it possible to keep up with the program, even if sickness prevents a child from coming on Sunday morning.

KidsJAM starts the first Sunday after Labor Day in September and runs through the Sunday before Memorial Day.

A Short Parenting Tip - Children Ministry

A Heart Approach is Different

Many parents use a simple behavior modification approach to raise their children today. "If you get your homework done then you can go out and play." "If you clean your room then you can watch a video."

Unfortunately children trained this way often develop a "What's in it for me?" mentality. "If I don't get something out of it, why should I obey?"

God is concerned with more than behavior. He's interested in the heart. The heart contains motivations, emotions, convictions, and values. A heart-based approach to parenting looks deeper. Parents still require children to finish their homework and clean up their rooms but the way they give the instructions is different.

Because the heart contains motivations, emotions, values, and convictions, parents look deeper in the day-to-day interaction with their kids. Instead of just getting things done, parents look for long-term change in their kids. Sometimes children aren't ready to change on a heart level and parents must work to address the heart. Sometimes that means more relationship to open the heart and other times it requires creating a crisis to show kids that they way they're living just isn't going to work.

A heart-based approach shares values and reasons behind rules. It requires more dialogue, helping children understand how their hearts are resistant and need to develop cooperation. A heart-based approach is firm but also relational. It's a mindset on the part of parents that looks for heart moments that then bring about significant change.

As you consider your kids remember the words that God said to Samuel, "Man looks at the outward appearance but the Lord looks on the heart."

(This idea was taken from the book, Parenting is Heart Work, by Dr. Scott Turansky and Joanne Miller, RN, BSN. Watch for more parenting tips in the future.)

Our Beliefs - Who We Are

As United Methodists, we have an obligation to bear a faithful Christian witness to Jesus Christ, the living reality at the center of the Church’s life and witness. To fulfill this obligation, we reflect critically on our biblical and theological inheritance, striving to express faithfully the witness we make in our own time. Two considerations are central to this endeavor: the sources from which we derive our theological affirmations and the criteria by which we assess the adequacy of our understanding and witness. Wesley believed that the living core of the Christian faith was revealed in Scripture, illumined by tradition, vivified in personal experience, and confirmed by reason. To learn more about the United Methodist Church visit www.umc.org
